Celebrating the Historic Port Albert's St. John's Anglican Church Anniversary!

Updated: Oct 2

Today marks a significant milestone in the history of Port Albert as we celebrate the anniversary of the beloved St. John's Anglican Church.

This cherished institution has stood as a beacon of faith, community, and resilience for generations.

A Glimpse into History

June 1856: The journey began when Rev. Willoughby Bean held the first Anglican service in Port Albert’s Customs House, laying the foundation for what would become a vital part of the community.

1862: Robert Turnbull generously gifted the site for the church. The appointed trustees—William Redmond Belcher, Thomas Burrows, Richard Kelly, and Jacob Ferris—oversaw its establishment. Richard Kelly, the Government Surveyor, prepared the plans for the church.

March 8, 1863: The first St. John’s Church was officially opened, marking a new chapter of spiritual growth and fellowship.

January 14, 1884: A devastating bushfire swept through the town, destroying the church. Thanks to the heroic efforts of residents, the furnishings and historic P.S. Clonmel relics were saved from the flames.

Rebuilding and Resilience

Following the fire, Rev. H.A. Betts led the charge in fundraising for a new church. The community rallied together, showcasing their unyielding spirit and dedication.

Architect George Hastings was tasked with designing the new church. Mr. John Avery Jnr served as the builder, and Mr. John Casbolt completed the brick foundations.

July 26, 1885: A special service was held to celebrate the opening of the newly constructed St. John’s Church, symbolising a fresh start and renewed hope.

A Community Effort

Today, the church is beautifully maintained by the Friends of St. Johns and local residents who volunteer their time to keep the church operating. Funding to keep the church operating is a joint initative between the Anglican Parish and Friends of St Johns fundraising.

Services are held regularly by the Anglican Ministry team, Jenny and Tony Wicking.

The dedication from everyone ensures that St. John’s continues to be a place of worship, community gathering, and historical significance.

As we reflect on the rich history of St. John's Anglican Church, we honor the legacy of those who came before us and the enduring faith that continues to unite our community.
