Located in Victoria’s Gippsland region, the historic neighbouring communities of Alberton, Tarraville, and Langsborough have played a significant role in shaping the development of Port Albert and its surroundings.

These once-thriving towns were central to the region's early trade, transportation, and settlement, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of historical buildings and cultural heritage.

While their populations have dwindled over the years, these communities still offer visitors a glimpse into the past, preserving their history and charm for future generations.

Town of Alberton

The Shire of Alberton was a local government area located approximately 220 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, Victoria. Established in 1855, the shire spanned 1,868.83 square kilometres and existed until 1994. The town of Alberton is situated along the South Gippsland Highway, just 7 kilometres south of Yarram.

Alberton's history dates back to 1842, with its post office opening in 1856. The area was officially constituted as the Alberton District in 1855 and became a shire in 1864. Throughout its early years, Alberton was a bustling hub featuring stores, hotels, churches, and even a Police Magistrate and Court of Petty Sessions. With the announcement of a railway line, the town experienced further growth, leading to the construction of new houses and factories.

One of the town's historical landmarks is its primary school, built in 1858 and designated as school number one in Victoria. Another highlight is the Victoria Hotel, commonly known as "The Albo" by locals, which has been serving the community since 1890.

Although the shire offices were initially planned for Alberton, they were relocated to Yarram in 1897, which resulted in a gradual shift of businesses away from the town. By 1921, the railway had also been extended to Yarram.

Today, Alberton remains a small cattle-grazing community with a vibrant local atmosphere with the “The Great Southern Rail Trail” which follows the former railway line, has revitalised tourism in the area, bringing visitors who enjoy scenic cycling routes and historical landmarks.

Town of Langsborough

Langsborough is a small rural community in Wellington Shire, located approximately 176 kilometres from Melbourne. Covering an area of about four-square kilometres, Langsborough is home to around 120 residents who actively support local businesses, the Country Fire Authority (CFA), and the regional fishing industry.

For those traveling along the Great Southern Rail Trail, the final stretch from Alberton to Port Albert, known as the Tarra Trail, passes through Langsborough. This scenic route takes visitors through lush landscapes and rural farmland before arriving at the historic seaside town of Port Albert.

Town of Tarraville

Founded in 1843, Tarraville became a vital stop for travellers heading from Port Albert to the Omeo goldfields in the 1850s. During this period, Tarraville was the largest town in Gippsland, boasting numerous businesses and seven hotels.

One of Tarraville's most significant historical landmarks is Christ Church, built in the 1850s. It was the first church constructed in Gippsland and is believed to be the second oldest church in Victoria. The church was also constructed WITHOUT nails!

Tarraville played a crucial role in supplying Tasmania with cattle and sheep via Port Albert and supported the Gippsland goldfields trade. Between 1848 and 1857, its population surged from 99 to 339 due to this flourishing trade.

During its peak, Tarraville housed several hotels, including the Royal Hotel, Tarraville Hotel, Bridge Inn, and Commercial Inn, all established around 1845. The town also featured a Mechanics Institute (opened in 1859), a brewery (Brown’s Brewery, founded in 1857), and multiple tanneries along Tarra River.

The Tarraville State School, which opened in 1856, is among the last remaining 19th-century buildings in the area.

Today, Tarraville has a small population of approximately 100 residents and around 50 homes. Despite its size, the town continues to maintain its historical charm and significance.

Tarraville Highlights:

  • Christ Church Tarraville: The first church built in Gippsland and one of Victoria's oldest churches (Photo Opportunity).

  • Tarraville State School: A preserved 19th-century building showcasing the town's educational history.

  • Fishing: Fishing on the Tarra River is a popular activity.
